Preschool & Kindergarten Programs

Traditional Preschool JK & Kindergarten Comprehensive Core Curriculum:

The VGDS Comprehensive Core Curriculum is built on the Core Knowledge framework described in our section on Educational Philosophy. The Comprehensive Core is supplemented by several supporting programs: Letterland, Handwriting Without Tears, and STEAM Education.

  • Letterland and Handwriting Without Tears: These programs are renowned programs that have been used successfully at VGDS for many years.
  • STEAM Education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics): In order to appropriately address STEAM initiatives, the Science All Around, WonderLab, and Outstanding Outside (outdoor classroom) programs have been developed to complement and enrich the Core Knowledge framework. These rich and developmentally appropriate programs, combined with the use of Promethean Boards in the Kindergarten classes, comprise the VGDS Comprehensive Preschool Curriculum.
  • Teachers meet, discuss, plan, and work together. A connected curriculum permeates the whole school and provides each child with an evenly balanced education and prepares a solid foundation upon which to build new knowledge. Our goal is to provide an intentionally designed environment where the joy of learning inspires our students to become lifelong learners. For in depth information about Core Knowledge, click here.
  • Core Knowledge Domains:
    Autonomy & Social Skills~Reading& Storytelling
    Mathematical Reasoning~Movement~Work Habits
    Emerging Literacy~Scientific Reasoning
    Music & Fine Arts~OralLanguage~Orientation in Time/Space
  • Fine Art Special
  • Village Green Day School children spend time in Specials designed to enrich their learning and social development. Each of these classes is taught by a specialist teacher who has been trained in their area of expertise.
  • Art: Works of art, from prehistory to contemporary, are introduced to our students as well as drawing, painting and collage, ‘cave painting’, making Persian tile patterns, creating mobiles and stabiles, sculpting, and architectural design construction. Children learn about, and are encouraged to create, in the style of, using a variety of materials and techniques. The emphasis is on the creative process. Discovery and exploration of water colors, oils and chalk pastels allow children to learn about color while working with wood, wire, string, and clay allow them to learn that they can turn most materials into art works. While creating their masterpieces, children build fine motor skills and self-confidence as they develop an esthetic sense.
  • Music: It is recognized that singing, and music and movement stimulate strong brain development in the early years. The program incorporates a variety of instruments, songs and musical styles. Children learn to recognize musical patterns and qualities as they experience sounds and songs related to a given theme. The Specialist also prepares the preschool children for musical performances for their families and friends.
